SAV Intelligent Living Space

We were very excited, and humbled, when partner Legrand | AV asked to partner with us to bring our newest condo showroom to life. Last year, when this project began, we teased you with a couple of blog posts, https://www.savinc.net/search?q=soon-to-be, but now that, what we call “Block 106” and the “SAV Intelligent Living Space” is complete, Legrand | AV came in and not only wrote this incredible story, they produced an amazing video. Hope you enjoy them:

Capturing the Magic

We love it when our photographer friends humor us by taking photos while the shades are in action. After being slightly puzzled at first when we ask, it quickly makes sense... shades are so important at SAV, from how they're controlled to fabric choices, and so much more, and they are always delighted to capture a little magic for us.

So what else is important?! Yes, control is HUGE, from a simple press of a button on an enhanced wall plate or remote to a slight touch on a wall panel or your smart phone – even by voice – you know, that ah-ha moment, but the beautiful fabric choices are also very important... UV control, percentage of transparency, full blackout, etc. And what about how they are installed... exposed, within valences, hidden pockets in the ceiling?

Technology, control, design, aesthetics, style, craftsmanship, reliability, precision, scalable, intuitive... In other words, we take window treatments VERY seriously.

What is Smart Glass?

If you’ve never seen it in action, it’s quite impressive. On many occasions we have clients request smart glass versus motorized shades or other window treatments, and every time we are delighted to integrate this modern technology into their environment. If you want to see it in person, we have some installed at our 618 N. Wallace showroom in Bozeman, swing by anytime and we’ll be happy show it off.

Easy to control, at a press of a button, smart glass {also known as switchable privacy glass} can be changed, instantly, from when-you-need-it privacy to a clear window, giving you comfort and peace of mind at a moments notice. From your private residence to your office, conference rooms, private rooms in restaurants, hospitals, clinics, medical offices, and banks, smart glass will transform the functionality and appearance of your space.

The Brains of the Operation

Just about a year ago we captured a couple of our technicians putting the final touches on one of our clients racks, and since then it's been a fun game of hide and seek finding these centralized "brains" of our custom technology integrations. Some are are on display... I mean why not, they are pretty impressive (on a very nerdy level, but we plead guilty), nonetheless even when they're tucked away in the basement or boiler room, they are definitely a statement piece when you come across them.

Precisely built to not only keep equipment stylish and organized, but safe and efficiently running, when it comes to racks we take them very seriously, from keeping temperatures at ideal levels to organizing the wiring so perfectly it's hard to believe someone took the time to make them so pretty.

Smart Fabric?!

Once you start thinking the future finally here, from AI to autonomous vehicles, something new comes along that makes you think otherwise. There are so many new ideas out there that have yet to be developed and it's exciting to see what's next.

Smart Fabric? Are we in Back to the Future II? A fabric that can sense environmental changes, send tactile or audible signals to visually and hearing impaired users, or track a wearer's vital signs? A fabric that interweaves strands of fiber optics, nano-electronics, or other conductive or semi-conductive threads in it? Sounds almost like science fiction.

What's really intriguing to us is the ability to control devices wirelessly. Gives a whole new meaning to smart home, doesn't it?! A recent patent made by Apple hints the fabric control technology could be integrated into other devices, including their MacBook, iPad and Watch, but also even chairs, sofas, airplanes and more. What could you imagine seeing smart fabric being used for?

Thanks for the great articles Dwell and TechStory.

Mirror TV Custom Install

Most people are accustomed to seeing our integrations after they’re complete… the glitz, the glam, the technology. The finished product is always so impressive, but we must never forget all of the hard work that goes into each and every one of them, from the beginning to the end.

Here is a great “behind the scenes” look at the teamwork that went into this custom install… a 99.5 x 72” Séura Mirror with LED Lights and a 27” TV in the center. Bridging the gap between design and technology, Séura offers an extensive line of innovative products, including smart mirrors, and our clients are always very excited to have them as an option.

Automated Art & Concealed TV

Accompanied by 20 zones of distributed audio, 13 zones of video (9 of which are from central distribution), a home theater, entertainment room and bar, all intuitively controlled throughout this gorgeous home with Savant, as well as automated lighting and shades by Lutron, we then put a cherry on the top by recessing and concealing a 65” 4k TV above the fireplace in the living room, hidden behind split panel art.

Taking it a step further, built to match the width and aesthetics of the display, we had a custom sound bar made by Leon, flush mounted with the TV below, marrying the two. Integrating sound bars is a great way to enhance and provide substantial voice and sound reproduction which is not possible with built-in TV speakers, providing directed sound from the display creating a realistic viewing experience.

When the TV is turned on, the panels split and slide to either side with the help of Future Automation, revealing the display and sound bar. When turned off, they slide back together creating a piece of art, completely hiding the TV and automation equipment within the enclosed frame.

Digital Solutions for All

At Home in Southwest Montana feature by Bozeman Daily Chronicle

Recently, a frustrated Bozeman couple wandered into the showroom at SAV Digital Environments on North Wallace Avenue. The couple had purchased an internet package from a local telecommunications company that ended up leaving their home with several dead zones. They attempted to solve the problem themselves by buying Wi-Fi extenders. No good. They consulted a local retail company that inevitably pushed more product on the couple, but that still did not solve the problem either. Finally, they made their way to SAV where they met Scott, the director of quality and customer.

Scott spoke with the couple for an hour that day and for another hour on the phone the following day before touring their home and providing a consultation. As he informed the couple of several potential solutions, they then asked how much this consultation is going to cost them. He said, “Our goal is to help you find the best solution to fit your needs, not to squeeze every last penny out of you.”

SAV is synonymous with seamless design, cutting-edge technology, and quality customer service. The company was formed as Studio AV in 2005, when owner Cory Reistad dreamt of creating the best audio and video environments possible. As technology progressed, so did business. They now outfit homes and businesses with not only A/V systems, but climate control, shades and lighting, security systems, and more, all of which can be automated with a press of a button on your smart phone, or even with voice. Wireless capabilities are also an in-home advancement we have seen take leaps within the last four or five years.

“What’s really important to us is clean, reliable, good-looking technology,” Scott says. “We hide wires to help preserve the aesthetics of the environment, we use flush details to help eliminate bulky components, and we sell appealing products that complement the environment.”

Though typical integrations involve visible products, if requested SAV is able to install “invisible” electronics, including speakers built into walls, pin-hole cameras, shades that roll up into concealed pockets, and even mirrors that transform into televisions.

“Smart mirrors are really cool,” Scott says. “You can get your agenda, morning news, or a movie in your bathroom or living room. And it’s all in the mirror!”

SAV is known for servicing some of the most beautiful and luxurious homes in southwest Montana, but a lot of people should know SAV values all integrations, large and small alike. “Most everyone likes the idea of cutting-edge technology, but they don’t necessarily know how to get it,” Scott says. “People who would want a cool audio system or a good security solution, it’s within arms reach and we’re here to help.”

The couple that wanted to kill their dead zones was presented with an option to achieve flawless internet connection. During their in-home consultation, Scott saw instruments laying around. Noticing music is important to them, he said, “We could create an immersive audio experience in here too that you could turn it off in one room and on in another from your phone.” Their faces lit up when they heard the word “immersive.” The solution was a mesh of overlapping wireless access points throughout the couple’s home with an end result being fast, reliable internet and then audio streaming from anywhere. And they can control everything from their phones, including shutting off internet to certain devices.

Stopping by the SAV showroom is a great way to find out what’s possible within your budget, not to mention getting a glimpse at some premier technology. You will see the fogging glass, camouflaged sound systems, automated shades and lights, and soon the latest in voice AI. It’s exciting to think that not only is this high-tech industry in our backyards, it could also be in our homes.

“This is the age of evolving design and technology,” Scott says. “Though we base our hearts in Bozeman and Big Sky, we have clients from Flathead to Paradise Valley to Missoula to Jackson, Wyoming.”

Hidden Magic

In addition to the architecture and interior design, the cutting-edge digital component of the home contributed to its winning status—many amenities are invisible when you enter the home, which helps create the home’s tranquility. SAV worked with WRJ Design from the beginning of this project to provide lighting control, automated window treatments and AV throughout the home, amongst more.

“This home took dedication and devotion to precision at every level from the entire team. Working with the iconic vision of WRJ on this project was a delight for us. We have become adept at weaving technology into homes while retaining design aesthetics, the marriage of the two, and that’s where technology and design align to maximize efficiency, convenience, and enhanced levels of comfort for our clients.” – Cory Reistad, SAV Digital Environments

Cory shares a behind-the-scenes look at technological components in the home:

Flush details: To eliminate bulky components and preserve the aesthetics of the home, such as wall outlets and switches, SAV used a trimless and flush mounting solution throughout for wiring devices and automated controls such as lighting and shades.

Automated shades & drapes: Electronically controlled and hidden within pockets, or recessed into the window casement when up, SAV integrated shading solutions that a create a seamless appearance throughout as well as automated drapery that opens and closes with a simple push of a button.

Invisible speakers: SAV installed invisible speakers in the walls and then finished over them with the surrounding surface to deliver ambient music that emanates throughout the space with no visual footprint. It’s almost as if the walls become the speakers themselves.

Lighting control: SAV knows that lighting has a significant impact on not only the aesthetics of any given space, but the occupants as well. In order to achieve enhanced levels of comfort, they added high-performance lighting and control throughout the home for smooth and continuous dimming. Not only does this approach save energy, it helps maintain a visual quality for the occupants without compromising the building’s electrical infrastructure.

Let there be light, or not...

Whether it's natural light intuitively controlled by automated shades, blinds and even smart glass or in-home lighting from in-ceiling fixtures and chandeliers to ambient under-lighting, we love  coming up with solutions that don't compromise the flow and integrity of any given space. We like to enhance the environment with lighting control through careful consideration while paying attention even the smallest details, which in turn allows the overall environmental design to be the focus, not the lighting. By taking this approach, we bring style to life and maximize efficiency, convenience, comfort levels, and above all, energy consumption.

Blending Cutting-Edge Technologies with Innovative Ideas

Imagine skiing or hiking up to your mud room and the doors slide open automatically for you. This high-end smart home brings a new meaning to the idea of ski-in, ski-out, or hike-in, hike-out, depending on the season, by blending a mix of cutting-edge technologies with innovative ideas.

Winter or summer, this home screams "entertainment" with all of its unique features, technology, and layout. Whether it's the automated sliding doors guiding you elegantly into the entertainment room downstairs that houses a home theater, pool table, and bar, or the deck above with panoramic views of the rocky mountains containing an automated fire pit, hot tub, weather proof TV and surround sound speakers, SAV's custom low-voltage integration system in this home utilizes the best of today's capabilities, all from a centralized secure IP network.

Not only are guests able to relax to streaming music that touches every corner of this home while sitting in an interior jetted tub, instantly being able to tint the windows with the press of a button, if they want, they can simultaneously watch movies, catch the game, play video games, or sing karaoke, all in surround sound from the various 4K TV’s and cosmetically matching sound-bar speakers throughout. The only thing that makes that better is doing it from the 160” projection screen that drops in front of the main TV in the downstairs entertainment room!

From all of these technologies and features, including security cameras covering the whole premises, entry point detection, and automated lighting and shades, this home packs a tech-punch that is hard to beat.

Gateway to the Big Sky
SAV-Entry-1-Audrey-Hall.jpg

Taking in the beauty of Montana’s Gallatin Gateway on the drive to Big Sky from Bozeman arguably primes ones senses for this project of SAV's we call "Wilderness Ridge." The first view of this modern home of stone and wood, contained within an elegant steel structure, presents itself as an artful fusion of unique, contemporary features with a “touch” of Western character.

As you approach this immaculate home, it seems to invitingly guide one in with illuminated down lights spotting from a wood ceiling, highlighting the entry and soft stone wall to the left, getting an overwhelming feeling of being welcomed. Entering, a visitors first “handshake” is with the lights, slowly dimming to off, as the west-facing shades reveal the gorgeous views and bright blue skies.

Although filled head to toe with technology - audio, video, security, automated lighting and shades – there is no clutter. The only visible signs of technology are well-placed keypads, decretive LED fixtures, thoughtfully placed down lights, and mid-day, down-positioned shades.

In the evening, as the sun begins to glare in from the west, the lights slowly illuminate and the strategically placed semi-transparent shades (or blackout depending on which room you are in) reveal themselves from custom pockets in the ceiling. SAV's automated programming is what makes this happen. In the moment, it was as if the lights and shades were talking to each other, congruent for the common good of creating calm. The aesthetics are uncompromising in these rooms.

As you continue through the home, the use of subtle, ambient lighting enhances the space, from under bathroom counter tops, to the impressive stairway, offering soft-lit safety. Once in the downstairs, lighting and shades are manipulated by simple, custom-labeled buttons to enhance the environment. “Rec Room” brought everything to life, while individuals like “Entertain” lit only select features – the pool table, bar and wine cellar. The room simply transformed per your request, whether you just want to relax and watch a movie or chill with music streaming from all angles.

SAV Digital Environments orchestrates various technologies to work in concert. Though the structure itself, the materials used, the design elements throughout, and the attention to detail were very intentional and impressive, the customized integration of environmental enhancements brings this home to life. The lighting, the shades, the control, the feeling... This home is perfectly fit for an enhanced lifestyle, designed to work seamlessly with advanced technologies, bringing intuitive control to the environments throughout.

Before & After

Packing much into this hi-end smart home, it takes advantage of the latest in IP distribution with centralized sources and local control. From smart devices to enhanced wall plates, SAV fully automated this home from head to toe, thoughtfully mounting 4k TV's throughout, including a SÉURA TV within the master bath mirror, in-ceiling audio in almost every room and sophisticated automated lighting and shade control, this space is a great example of design and technology seamlessly working together. ©Whitney Kamman Photography, Shelter Interiors & Bayliss Architects

Home & Business Automation Solutions

As custom integrators, we are presented with challenges on a daily basis... and we love finding solutions. When it comes to home and business automation, performance and aesthetics are key factors in successful integrations.

From television pop-up and drop-down lifts, to projector concealment systems, solutions from partners like Nexus 21 allow us to break down the barriers of conventional design and room orientation. Put your technology in motion with the touch of a button using the quietest, most reliable lift mechanisms available.

Home Water Security & Safety

Another custom integration offered by SAV that a lot of people may not know about; Home Water Security & Safety. Automatic water shut-off systems provide round-the-clock indoor flood protection and work with wired and wireless flood sensors, wall switches, and most home security and home automation systems.

Recently, we were not only able to capture a few photos of one of our technicians dialing some in a new build, we received an email from one of many delighted clients the other day whom was able to avoid a potential crisis due to the water monitoring system that we integrated into their home automation system:

Just wanted to let you know that the drain line from the clothes washer came adrift the other night and was spilling water in the laundry. The sensors detected the water, sounded the alarm and closed the shut-off. Very nice, thank you! – Angela S.

We were delighted to hear and happy to have played a part this "crisis averted." To learn more about adding home water safety, or anything else we offer as part of our security, surveillance and life safety division, email our Client Service department at service@savinc.net.

Details Matter

SAV is dedicated to not only finding and vetting the smartest and the best technologies out there, but technologies that almost seem invisible. Here is a great example of performance, aesthetics, and life safety.

Challenge: Our client has floor to ceiling doors that would hit anything protruding from the ceiling and they preferred having smoke and carbon monoxide detectors that wouldn't be eye sores.

Solution: The Bosch FCP-500 detector. Equipped with two optical sensors and a contamination sensor, they're modern, ultra-low profile, and ideal for high-end installations. These versatile detectors deliver advanced technology that practically eliminates unwanted or false alarms while their sleek flush-mounted styling means that they blend easily with any interior décor.
